Top 30 Mexican restaurants in Houston- By Alison Cook, Bao Ong and Jody Schmal

Whether it’s Tex-Mex or regional Mexican cuisines, taquerias or seafood spots, high-end restaurants or salt-of-the-earth joints, Houston lays claim to some of the best Mexican food in America. It’s a touchstone that spans cultures here, a foundational element of our ever-evolving local foodways.

Mexican food revives us, and soothes us, and sits at the center of many of our civic rituals. We cannot do without it.

Here’s our curated list of the best places in the city to seek out Mexican food in all its guises.

Note: The Houston Chronicle pays full price for every meal consumed during restaurant visits; our staff writers never accept freebies or comps in exchange for coverage.

Sylvia’s Enchilada Kitchen

We love the kaleidoscope of enchilada choices at Sylvia Casares’ warm, comfortable restaurant that has two locations. It’s hard to pass up the “Mexico City” green chicken enchiladas in their brisk tomatillo sauce, or the very Texas “Lubbock” version piled with a meaty rubble of chile con carne. The enchilada sampler plates here actually work: their platter holds four different smaller-size versions without the sauces colliding. What makes the cooking feel special is the way Casares’ Rio Grande Valley roots make themselves felt in everything from her excellent mesquite-grilled fajitas, shrimp or quail to a classic carne guisada that has the homey feel of comida casera. Don’t miss the picamole, a splice of guacamole and pico de gallo.
